The first Melbourne VapeFest was held at Kelly’s Bar & Kitchen on Saturday 24th of March and was a massive success. You can read the followup article on the ATACA blog.
Some of you may remember from last year, as part of the AUSSIEASH project, I was attempting to contact and discuss the issues surrounding electronic cigarettes with various State and Federal Health departments.

Well it appears she has found out about VapeFest and rather than contacting us directly, Ms Smith prefers to harass the venue. The following is a copy of an email received by Kelly’s Bar & Kitchen:
As a vaper, how often have you been asked this question?
How often have you been told “you can’t smoke here” or if your tank mod is a “bong”?
We all know at least the basics but it can be difficult to remember everything important when you’re put on the spot – and that’s assuming you can even be bothered!
With this in mind, and in preparation for the first Melbourne VapeFest, the Australian Tobacco Alternatives Consumer Association (ATACA) have prepared a trifold educational brochure that you can print out at home and hand to curious smokers and non-smokers alike. Specifically designed for the Australian market and prepared in a way that if you just want to print one side it will still cover the basics. Print off both sides and you’ve got the whole story.
Thank you to James Dunworth over at The Smokers Angel for putting this together.

So electronic cigarettes are not only cheaper and more efficient as a quit smoking aid than pharmaceutical NRT products, looks like there are also safer!
However, it turns out that there is an additional source of carcinogens in nicotine gum users which is not a factor in vapers. A a recent study published online ahead of print in the journal Cancer Research reports that the use of nicotine gum is associated with significant exposure to a potent carcinogen and concludes that oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) use therefore poses a potential carcinogenic hazard to some users.
“Let’s celebrate the first World Vaping Day – a worldwide event recognising the phenomenal success of the new alternative to smoking!”
Thursday March 22nd will be the first “World Vaping Day” and it’s time for Australia to do it’s part. Conversation has just started on AussieVapers about what events we can pull together and where they will be.
As for myself? I’m currently looking for a local pub that would be happy to host a meetup (which means vaping inside), and finding out which local tobacco stores carry any electronic cigarette products. Admittedly they only tend to carry low-end disposable style products, but anything is a great start.
Stay tuned for more details!
…but then I took an arrow to the knee.
One word sums up a big part of why I haven’t posted anything for awhile.

How likely is smoking to kill you – and what you can do about it if you can’t quit…
A few days ago news reports starting appearing with titles like “Are E-Cigarettes Bad For Health? Study Shows They Quickly Affect Airways” and the collective ears of the vaping universe perked up.
“Researchers in Greece saw changes in the lung function of healthy smokers who puffed on an e-cigarette for just five minutes — although it’s not clear what the long-term result of those responses might be in regular e-cigarette users, the team reports in the journal Chest.”
OK fine. What exactly does that mean? Continue reading
